Ballad of America Volume 2: America Singing

The songs in this collection are among the most commonly sung in the history of the United States. They present uniquely American musical blends, with roots in European and African traditions and branches that have sprouted countless regional and personal variants throughout the country. Collectively, these songs of work, fun, and love transcend social and ethnic boundaries, painting a broad picture of America during the 18th and 19th centuries when music making was, for many, an integral part of everyday life.

Songs include Wabash Cannonball, Buffalo Gal, Oh Susanna!, Pick a Bale of Cotton, Down in the Valley, and many more.

Matthew Sabatella named
Best Acoustic Performer
New Times Broward/Palm Beach
Best of 2005

"...Sabatella's best asset is easily his voice, urgent but unforced, sweetly melancholy in telling personal stories and powerfully evocative in rendering antiquated songs intimate again."

message from matthew

05.03.06 - Oops. Haven't written in a while. Just a quickie here. Ballad of America Volume 2 is almost complete. Look for it this Fall.

04.27.05 - Well, the album is out and I couldn't be more pleased. We had two fantastic CD release parties at Luna Star Cafe in Miami and again at Bamboo Room in Lake Worth. Almost all of the special guests from the CD (and then some) performed together on one stage: Todd Thompson, Henk Milne, Chris DeAngelis, Larry Crismond, Lynn Griffith, Brian Humphrey, Randy Rodriguez, Kevin Wells, Jack Stamates, Mark Kane. Check the upcoming shows, because many of them will feature some of these same amazing musicians. Thanks to them all.

I just booked summer dates at various Miami-Dade County Library branches for a special children and family program that will introduce the story of America and traditional folk songs to even the littlest ones.

01.19.05 - Ballad of America Volume 1: Over a Wide and Fruitful Land is currently being manufactured and will be in my hands at the end of January. It should be available for sale here and at BalladofAmerica.com shortly thereafter.

I'm really looking forward to the CD release party at Luna Star Cafe on Friday, February 18. If you're in South Florida, you don't want to miss it. Most of the people who played on the CD will join me onstage and do a few tunes on their own.

09.21.04 - My CDs Where the Hell Am I? and A Walk in the Park are now available online from CDBaby.com. You can preview all of the tracks from both albums.

Ballad of America Volume 1: Over a Wide and Fruitful Land is mixed and almost ready to go to manufacturing. I can't wait for you to hear it. Advance copies were purchased by Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba, Canada for use in listening stations that accompany their presentation of American Tableaux: Many Voices, Many Stories. The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, installations, prints, and photographs from the permanent collection of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

04.09.04 - The new Ballad of America CD is sounding beautiful so far thanks to special guests like Lynn Griffith on banjo, Tom and Ellen Hogan (Flying Turtles String Band) on mandolin and fiddle, Mario Colangelo (Vito) on percussion, and Larry Crismond on banjo. Chris DeAngelis (18 Wheelers) is getting some upright bass parts together. More to come.

11.19.03 - Hiya. Thrilled to be performing with Lynn Griffith on mandolin, banjo, and accordion. We're going to start recording right away and I plan to tour this summer in support of a new CD. Happy holidays!
